Flashback: June 22, 1995
Side A plays the hits. Side B clears your head.

Welcome, Fellow Time Travelers!
Another week, another trip down memory lane with The GenX Edit! This week, we're setting our DeLorean to June 22, 1995.
Ah, '95. This is a nod to the days before smartphones, when answering machines were our gatekeepers. You didn’t pick up…you screened. That pause after the beep was sacred. Someone you liked? You grabbed the phone mid-message. Telemarketer? Let the tape roll. It was passive-aggressive communication at its finest and we were masters of it.
1995 was a year of cultural shifts, technological whispers, and a distinct feeling that the world was on the cusp of something new. From the O.J. Simpson trial dominating headlines to the release of Windows 95 later in the year, it was a pivotal moment.
So, grab your oversized flannel, queue up some Alanis Morissette, and let's get nostalgic!

Mixtape Memory Lane
The year the radio was still king, Alanis was mad as hell, and TLC told us to quit chasing waterfalls.
Music was all over the map…and we loved that. Here are 5 tracks that defined the summer:
“Waterfalls” – TLC
Smooth vocals, real talk. This song gave us an anthem and a public service announcement.“Wonderwall” – Oasis
Your college roommate played this on acoustic guitar until you never wanted to hear it again. But you sang along anyway.“Gangsta’s Paradise” – Coolio ft. L.V.
A haunting, hook-heavy ballad of street wisdom. You didn’t skip this one.“You Oughta Know” – Alanis Morissette
You didn’t need to be scorned to scream this in the car. Raw, brilliant, unforgettable.“Kiss from a Rose” – Seal
The Batman Forever tie-in that snuck onto every wedding playlist for a decade.

Screen Time Rewind
In the summer of ’95, we were still planning our TV time and piling into theaters instead of scrolling through streaming apps.
Toy Story blew our minds, not just because it was fully animated by computers, but because Woody and Buzz somehow had more emotional depth than most live-action leads.
Braveheart gave us freedom speeches and historical inaccuracies in equal measure, while Apollo 13 reminded us just how much tension you could pack into a mission everyone already knew ended safely.
On daytime TV, The Bold and the Beautiful was still heating up.
That June, Sheila Carter’s surprise return stirred all the drama…shot-gun threats, poison vials, and cliffhangers galore. The Forrester fashion world was buzzing, and we were all watching.
Daytime talk in ’95 wasn’t just outrageous…it got dangerously close to tragedy. That spring, The Jenny Jones Show taped an episode revealing a same-sex secret crush. The guest, caught off guard, later committed murder. The episode never aired, but the scandal made headlines and reshaped the rules of reality TV.
Just a few months after launching in January 1995, The WB was still finding its footing. Its first shows including The Wayans Bros., Unhappily Ever After, The Parent ‘Hood, and Muscle grabbed a modest share of the ratings but none were breakout hits. The WB’s quirky lineup and focus on youth would eventually pay off.
Meanwhile, Friends was only in its second season, but the catchphrases had already taken hold. Joey’s “How you doin’?” was already working by Season 2 and trust us, it was gold long before this line showed up on T‑shirts.

Life Reboot: Mind
Finding Your Zen in the Digital Age
In 1995, the internet was just beginning to creep into our lives, promising a brave new world of connection and information. We were still navigating the analog world, but the seeds of our always-on, hyper-connected future were being sown.
Fast forward to today, and our minds are often bombarded by constant notifications, endless scrolling, and the pressure to be perpetually available.
How do we protect and nurture our well being in a world that constantly demands our attention? In 1995, finding your 'zen' might have involved a quiet walk, reading a physical book, or simply disconnecting from the limited technology available.
Today, the challenge is far greater. We're constantly plugged in, bombarded by information, and often feel a pressure to respond instantly. This constant connectivity can lead to mental fatigue, anxiety, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. We crave moments of quiet, reflection, and genuine connection.
So, what's the modern GenXer's path to mindfulness? It's about intentional disconnection. It's about setting boundaries with technology and rediscovering the simple joys that nourish our spirits.
This could mean scheduling 'digital detox' periods, engaging in hobbies that don't involve screens, spending time in nature, or cultivating deeper, in-person relationships. It's about actively choosing to slow down and to be present amidst the digital noise.
Just as we once sought out the perfect mix tape to soothe our ears, we now seek out practices that soothe our minds, ensuring we don't lose ourselves in the ever accelerating pace of modern life.

The Trial That Stopped the Country
In June 1995, the O.J. Simpson murder trial was broadcast into living rooms across America day after day, gavel to gavel. Defense attorney Johnny Cochran became a household name with his sharp suits and sharper sound bites. The phrase “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” echoed far beyond the courtroom.
The case gripped the nation and exposed deep divisions. For some, it was a story of fame, race, and power colliding. For others, it was reality TV before that was even a thing. Either way, everyone had an opinion…and most still do.
